Hear What Our Residents' Loved Ones Have to Say
My mother was very happy with her stay at Charter House. The staff made her comfortable and treated her with kindness and respect. Her room was spacious, homely and beautifully furnished with an en-suite bathroom.
Mrs S.
I will never forget the kindness those same carers and other members of your staff showed to me. It helped me greatly to get through a difficult time. Charter House stands out as a beacon in the care sector that gets too many bad reports.

Frequently Asked Questions
Residential care involves caring for and supporting older adults in a specific setting. Usually, these older adults live in the same building or complex, which comes with added help. That could be an emergency cord system, on-site carers, social events, and much more. The idea is to cater to all the resident’s needs on-site.
Most people who live in residential care require a little extra support. They might need help with washing, cooking, or shopping, something the staff are more than happy to help with. Residents generally have their own room, unlike other forms of residential care with independent living, where a fully-equipped apartment is available.
BCHA is incredibly proud of Bedford Charter House. We know a lot of older adults are nervous about residential care homes. They think it’s going to be an awful nursing home. We work hard to make sure that’s not the case.
Residents often feel right at home from the moment they move in. Little wonder, considering that the care home is less a building and more of a small village. We’ve got all your amenities on-site, including beautiful en-suite bedrooms, a large social area, a cinema, friendly staff, and the town centre just a stone’s throw away. You’re always close to your loved ones and friends.
Care homes, nursing homes, and residential care offer different levels of support for older adults. Here’s a breakdown of each:
Care homes provide personal care, including help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and meals, for individuals who do not require medical assistance.
Nursing homes offer similar services but with the addition of round-the-clock nursing care for residents with more complex medical needs or ongoing health issues.
Residential care is a broad term that encompasses both care homes and nursing homes, focusing on providing a safe, supportive environment for older adults. While care homes cater to those who need less medical attention, nursing homes are equipped for people requiring regular medical supervision or care from a registered nurse.
Bedford Charter House is designed for adults over the age of 65 who can no longer cope on their own. Usually, residents aren’t suited to independent living, meaning that the complex is generally reserved for adults who only want a room.
That being said, BCHA offers numerous sheltered accommodations. Here, residents receive a little extra support in the form of an emergency alarm call system and manager but get their own apartment. It’s the best of both worlds! We highly recommend looking at this option if you’re considering care homes with independent living.
